What you can do with it

Check a "lossless" download before you keep it

An MP3 renamed to .flac takes its cut-off with it. We measure where the sound stops and tell you what that points at — with the picture to back it up, and honest wording when the file sits in the grey zone.

Master check before you release

Integrated LUFS, loudness range, true peak and clipped samples in one pass, so you know whether your track meets the -14 LUFS streaming target and stays under a -1 dBTP ceiling before you upload it.

Work out why a file sounds bad

Muffled, harsh or noisy and you cannot say why? The report shows a low cut-off, a squashed dynamic range, samples pinned at full scale or a high noise floor — and points you at the tool that fixes it.

Frequently asked questions

How can you tell a fake FLAC from a real one?

We measure how much sound the file holds in each band near the top of the spectrum. MP3 and AAC encoders save space by throwing the top away, which leaves a sharp cut-off — around 16 kHz for 128 kbps, 19 kHz for 192 kbps, 20.5 kHz for 320 kbps — and that cut-off survives when the file is later saved as FLAC or WAV. A file that was never compressed carries sound right up to the top.

Can the verdict be wrong?

Yes, which is why we call it evidence and not proof. Quiet acoustic music, old masters and badly digitised tapes can genuinely hold nothing above 16 kHz, and someone who wants to fool the test can add noise back above the shelf. When the cut-off sits right at the top, where a 320 kbps encoder and a gently rolled-off master look identical, we say so instead of guessing. Look at the spectrogram as well: a dead-straight edge across a busy modern track is about as clear as this test gets.

What do LUFS, true peak and clipping mean?

LUFS is loudness as people hear it, averaged over the whole track — the number streaming services turn up or down to. True peak is the highest level the signal actually reaches once it is converted back to sound, which can sit above the highest sample. Clipping is what happens when the waveform runs out of headroom and its tops are cut flat, which sounds like crackle or harshness.

What loudness should I aim for?

Spotify, YouTube and Amazon play back at about -14 LUFS, Apple Music at -16 LUFS, and podcasts are usually delivered at -16 LUFS mono or -19 LUFS for broadcast. Keep the true peak at -1 dBTP so the codecs the platforms use have room to work. Louder than the target is not a win: the platform simply turns it down and you keep the squashed dynamics.

Which files can I check?

FLAC, WAV, ALAC, MP3, M4A, AAC, OGG, OPUS and video files up to 100 MB. Checking a file that is already MP3 works too — you get its loudness, its peaks and the cut-off its encoder left, and the verdict simply says it is lossy.

What do I get back?

A report on the page in plain language, a spectrogram you can look at, and the same measurements as a JSON file you can download, keep or feed to a script. Nothing is written into your audio and your file is not changed.

Is it free, and do my files stay private?

Yes, it is free with no signup. Your file is processed on our own servers and deleted automatically, and nobody else sees it. The download link is unguessable and is never listed or shared anywhere.

It's a bit annoying that I have to select the conversion type every time, and my initial selection doesn't stick. Other than that, everything's fine.

קצת מעצבן שכל פעם צריך לבחור סוג המרה ולא נשאר מה שבחרתי ראשון חוץ מזה הכל טוב

If you want to analyze everything from the individual instruments to the vocal arrangements in a song, VocalRemover is exactly what you need. You can listen to every component of your song in detail. I don’t usually leave comments, but I decided to leave one here because I imagine that if someone has made it this far and has doubts or needs encouragement to use VocalRemover, they should go ahead and do it—they won’t regret it!!

This is an unreal service! The sound is amazing and all of the available options make it very functional. The price structure being based on minutes converted makes the service valuable by not "penalizing" converting short audio clips/songs.
