A spectrogram is a picture of sound. Time runs left to right, pitch runs bottom to top, and the colour shows how loud each frequency is at each moment. Where a waveform only shows how loud a track is, a spectrogram shows what it is made of.

Bass sits along the bottom, vocals and instruments in the middle, cymbals and air at the top. Bright colours mean loud, dark means quiet. Horizontal lines are sustained notes, vertical lines are drum hits, and a flat black band across the top means those frequencies are simply not in the file.

It is the standard way to look. MP3 and AAC discard the top of the spectrum, leaving a sharp horizontal shelf — commonly near 16 kHz, 19 kHz or 20 kHz — with black above it. A real lossless file usually keeps content right up to the top. Treat it as strong evidence rather than proof: quiet recordings, old masters and some instruments genuinely have little high content, and a determined faker can add noise back.

HD is enough to see the shape of a track and renders in about a second. Pick 4000×2000 when you want to inspect the top of the spectrum closely — it takes a few seconds longer. With the axis labels switched on, the scales are drawn in a margin around the picture, so the finished image is a little larger than the size you chose.
